2019 LTS Highlights

LTS was set up in January 2018 with the aim of promoting Networking and Technical Development amongst young professionals. The idea was to try and get individuals across the professions in a room and speaking to each other on a regular basis. Within two years, we have nearly 300 people on the mailing list (from less than 20 people initially!) and feedback to date shows that many of you have made good connections that should help you progress in your careers.

To remind you of the incredible speakers we have had this year and to whet your appetite for the future, we provide a summary of the 2019 presentations below. Our speakers next year are equally fantastic and the topics will cover everything from American Tax to Cryptocurrency.

We hope you can join us and encourage you to purchase your membership now for free entry to 2020 seminars.

February 2019

Ken Almand, Partner at BDO (previously of Moore Stephens), started the year with a very interactive talk on the principles of Transfer Pricing. Through discussion, we learnt that the concepts of Transfer Pricing are more complex than they seem and that technology may only have complicated things further.

March 2019

Rebecca Sheldon, a Barrister at Old Square Tax Chambers kindly stepped in last minute to provide a summary of the Taxation of Trusts. She highlighted the technical pitfalls of planning and areas likely to change in future.

April 2019

Paul Howard, Director at Dixon Wilson, presented a series of examples on Corporate Reconstructions and demonstrated how alternative ways of obtaining the same outcome an result in different tax liabilities. The cases showed how knowledge of certain aspects of tax legislation and reliefs can impact even the simplest reorganisations.

May 2019

Keith Gordon, Barrister at Temple Tax Chambers gave us a Tax Cases Update, resulting in in depth discussion around the value of a substitution clause in contracts of services. We look forward to welcoming Keith back next year.

June 2019

John Lovell of Lovell Consulting, provided an insight into the underappreciated area of Capital Allowances. He demonstrated that with the help of a specialist, the savings available are huge. Clients should definitely feel the added value where we are able to bring these savings to their attention.

July 2019

We continued in a similar vein in July when Chris Barker of Jumpstart UK gave an overview of the conditions required for Research and Development credits and demonstrated the savings available when companies are correctly advised.

September 2019

Valentina Sloane QC, a Barrister at Devereux Tax Chambers, talked about the Do’s and Don’ts of Tax Tribunal. She covered the simple but essential requirements of adherence to Tribunal procedures and also included tips for getting the best value for clients. This was an essential presentation for all tax advisers and lawyers who deal with contentious tax disputes with HMRC.

October 2019

Jaspal Pachu, Partner at Freeths LLP, explained SEIS/EIS and VCT Reliefs, highlighting the requirements of each and citing case studies where relief had been denied on the basis of technicalities. This is definitely one area where we must ensure that all relevant conditions are met.

November 2019

Graham Davies and David Smith, Senior Tax Policy Leads from HMRC. David and Graham spoke about about HMRC’s progress on implementation of the Common Reporting Standard and how the information obtained has been used. Following the Requirement to Correct, Graham provided an overview of HMRC’s thinking that led to the legislation and the effects of it to date.

November 2019

LTS members were invited by the Royal Society of St George to attend their inaugural Young Professionals event on HMS President. This was a fantastic opportunity to network with Young Londoners across professions.

December 2019

Christmas drinks at the Anthropologist, Bank, kindly sponsored by Goodman Masson were a great success! It was fantastic to see LTS members networking confidently in a relaxed environment and shows how effective regular meetings are for developing relationships. This was a great way to celebrate 2019 and we are looking forward to 2020!
